GAP Festival Opera: The Marriage of Figaro

After a stunningly successful debut in 2022, GAP Festival Opera returns to Streatley Farmhouse for three nights of glorious music in an enchanting setting.

Goring soprano Stephanie Bodsworth has assembled a cast of professional singers and musicians from some of the country’s finest opera houses to produce an exclusive performance of Mozart’s best-loved opera, the Marriage of Figaro.

Sung here in a new translation by director Martin Lamb, the opera is a tale of double-crossing, intrigue and mistaken identity as hero Figaro battles to thwart his philandering employer’s attempts to steal his beloved Susanna from him on their wedding day. The singers will be accompanied by a five piece ensemble conducted by music director Benjamin Cox.

The opera will be staged in a magnificent 18th century barn transformed into a beautiful theatre for the occasion with a set designed by another Goring resident, international opera designer Ilka Weiss.

Guests are invited to enjoy a picnic in the lovely gardens. Specially curated Festival Hampers are available to pre-order and come with a table and chairs set up ready and waiting for you on the main lawn.  Alternatively, bring your own picnic and choose your perfect spot around the grounds.  Doors open at 5pm so you can start your dining before the music and the interval will be an hour long for you to finish your picnic at leisure.

Two bars will be open serving chilled champagne, Pimms, G&Ts and a range of wines, beers, soft drinks as well as tea and coffee throughout the evening.

If the weather is unkind, or for those who prefer more sheltered dining, the Carpenters Bar, in another ancient barn at the heart of the farmyard, also provides undercover space with hay bale seats.

There are three ticket prices: a small number of premium seats at £50, other uninterrupted view seats at £40 and seats with a slightly restricted view of some parts of the stage at £30 (rest assured these still afford guests a wonderful experience).
