The Great Green Food Day

Join our local contribution to the national ‘Great Big Green Week’ (8-16 June 2024), the UK’s biggest celebration of community action organised by the Climate Coalition charity to tackle climate change and protect nature.

Come and discover creative ways to let our eating and food play a vital part in helping tackle climate change, reduce waste and protect nature. Bring a picnic or pick up lunch from the collection of food and drink stalls and enjoy all the day has to offer.

More than 20 stalls focusing on climate change and in particular food production and consumption will include locally grown plants, fresh vegetables, nature and gardening books, recycling and composting plus Wallingford Food Bank and Waste2Taste.

Live music, WaterAid’s Humphrey the Camel, swift bird box-making, a miniature eco-garden competition, river pollution presentations and a potato growing competition with four participating local schools will ensure an amazing range of free activities for you to enjoy.

Local storyteller Jonathan Clifton, will perform his own creation of poems and songs in ‘Poo Corner’. And the local library will host a ‘Poo’ quiz and ‘Plop’ Trumps amongst other poo-themed activities and crafts to entertain children of all ages.

The day will also hold a Climate Change Question Time session (free, but ticketed), which will see lively debate amongst a prestigious panel of local experts. Looking at how we can all do our bit to help the environment with what we eat, how we travel and how we garden.

Local food and drinks on offer include local artisan bread and cheese, freshly-cooked salads and sandwiches from popular Goring café Pierreponts’ pop-up, freshly-made soup, homemade cakes from the local WI and an eco-barbecue.

The Miller of Mansfield will be running a rustic bar, sponsored by local brewer Renegade, selling local beer, lager, cider and soft drinks, all in eco cans.
